FoA Wants Ban on Snaring of Wolves

Friends of Animals (FoA) is calling for a ban on the snaring of wolves throughout Alaska. In order to achieve this they are beginning a campaign to collect signatures and get this issue on the ballot in 1998. A poll done by Dittman Research found 58% of respondents saying they would vote for a law against snaring of wolves, with another 4% leaning towards that position.      Priscilla Feral, president of FoA said that snares are a cruel method of killing wolves. But due to their being inexpensive and easy to use, they are over-used. Along with leading to painful deaths, they kill indiscriminately, often catching other animals than the ones targeted, she said.

FoA has until January 12 to gather a minimum of 24,500 signatures in order to get on the ballot for November 1998. The initiative would also make illegal the transportation, sale or possession of a wolf skin known to have been taken with a snare. The penalty for violations would be a year in prison and a $5000 fine.
